Hungarian Government Scholarship 2024

Stipendium Hungaricum, the Hungarian government's prestigious higher education scholarship programme, offers a wide range of courses to outstanding international students with an excellent academic record. The scholarship aims to support the internationalization and continued development of Hungarian higher education, strengthen the international relations of the academic and research community, and enhance the good reputation and competitiveness of Hungarian higher education worldwide.

The programme, established by the Hungarian government in 2013, is supervised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and managed by the Tempus Public Foundation.

Advantages of single-level and non-university bachelor's, master's, and master's programs:

  • Free education – exemption from paying tuition fees
  • Monthly stipend – non-degree level Bachelor’s, Master’s and Single-level Master’s: A monthly amount of 43,700 HUF (110 EUR) contribution towards living expenses in Hungary, for 12 months per year, until completion of studies
  • Housing contribution – a free place in university housing or a contribution of 40,000 HUF per month towards accommodation costs for the duration of the scholarship (please note that if the student does not live in university housing, the amount of 40,000 HUF per month is a contribution towards this rent) costs, and in In larger cities – especially in the capital – this contribution will not cover the full amount of rental costs.)
  • Medical insurance – healthcare services in accordance with the relevant Hungarian legislation (Law LXXX of 1997, National Health Insurance Card) and supplementary medical insurance in the amount of up to 65,000 Hungarian forints (cca € 170) per year per person.

  • Monthly stipend – Doctoral level: According to current Hungarian legislation, the monthly amount of the scholarship is 140,000 HUF (365 EUR for the first stage of education (4 semesters) and 180,000 HUF (470 EUR) for the second stage (4 semesters)) – for a period of 12 One month a year, until the study is completed.
  • Accommodation contribution – a free place in university accommodation or a contribution of 40,000 HUF per month towards accommodation costs for the duration of the scholarship (please note that if the student does not live in university accommodation, 40,000 HUF per month is a contribution towards this) rental costs, and in In larger cities – especially in the capital – this contribution will not cover the full amount of rental costs.)
  • Medical insurance – healthcare services in accordance with the relevant Hungarian legislation (Law LXXX of 1997, National Health Insurance Card) and supplementary medical insurance in the amount of up to 65,000 Hungarian forints (cca € 170) per year per person.

This means that it does not fully cover all living costs and students need to add their own financial resources to cover all living expenses in Hungary. All applicants are strongly advised to check expected living expenses in Hungary and in the city they wish to live in before applying.

Documents required for submission:

  • Personal photo (recent with white background)
  • A copy of the passport (or personal ID card or birth certificate with an English translation)
  • High school certificate (baccalaureate), university certificate, master’s certificate, transcript of grades and their translation into English according to the stage the student is applying for.
  • CV in English.
  • Motivational speech in English.
  • A medical certificate (you can obtain it from a government hospital in your country) and translate it into English.
  • An English language certificate (according to the universities’ requirements) or you can provide proof indicating that your previous studies were in the English language.
